New line up, new tour, new look, but it has to look like New Order

Having designed for New Order since 1993 (with Peter Saville), we were delighted to be asked to design their promotional material for their much publicised ‘reunion’, with Howard Wakefield taking over as creative director. Following the success of 2 charity concerts in France and Belgium in October 2011, New Order embarked on a world tour which continued throughout 2012 to 2014. With the acrimonious departure of bassist Peter Hook, the band wanted a clean break from the past and asked that the new design signalled this change, but it still had to retain a look that was New Order.

New Order Now

An initial symbol was created, merging the French and Belgian flags, which formed a system that evolved to represent each ‘leg’ of the tour. French and Belgian colours were adapted for the UK concerts, then transformed into the colours of Brazil, Chile & Argentina, followed by the Australian and New Zealand sporting colours (with Aboriginal and Maori flags). This led to the North American and European tours culminated with a Japanese, Singaporean and South Korean finale. The colourful  symbols were coupled with minimal Akzidenz Grotesk typography which could be ‘rolled-out’ by the promoters around the world.
